Notes before you begin
Accounting Software
This guide is written specifically for QuickBooks Online Advanced or Plus. Many nonprofits are using QBO because it has all the functionality that most organizations need to keep their books, and 501(c)(3) organizations can get a huge discount through TechSoup! You’ll learn more about the discounted QBO subscription in the first step.
Accounting Knowledge
Understanding the basics of accounting is helpful, but not necessary to follow this guide. This is the nuts and bolts, step by step, what to do. That said, learning some accounting will be helpful as you dive deeper into the bookkeeping for your organization. I have sprinkled some basic accounting concepts throughout the guide, so you’ll likely learn a few things along the way!
QBO User Interface
QBO has a tendency to make changes to their user interface. For the most part, in recent changes, functionality has remained the same. Most of the changes have been related to the navigation menu. Some of the instructions in this guide were created before recent updates. If your navigation looks different from the images in the guide, you will still be able to find the pages in the new “All Apps” menu under the same page name.
