1. Get QuickBooks Online through TechSoup
Your very first step is to sign up with TechSoup and request the discounted QBO subscription. TechSoup offers discounts on software, tech devices, and services for 501(c)(3) nonprofits, so it’s a great resource for tech needs aside from QBO as well.
The price for QBO through TechSoup is minimal compared to a regular accounting software subscription. (Think paying for an entire year of the software what you would normally be paying for one month) Plus, by starting out in QBO, you will be prepared with all the functionality you need for future growth!
TechSoup offers either Plus or Advanced versions of QBO. Advanced is recommended, if you can afford it, but either edition will work. You can always upgrade to Advanced later if you try Plus and find out Advanced would suit your needs better. Sometimes one or both go “out of stock” for a short time, but they come back, so just check again in a few days.
When TechSoup approves your request, they will send you an email with login instructions. Click the link in that email, set up your login, then go on to the next step to get your account set up!
I found the answer: If you signed in to an existing QuickBooks Online account and want to copy your company to your new subscription, you’ll be able to do that later. When customizing your new company during setup, enter a slightly different name from your old company, such as “Organization (New)” or “Organization 2.” This will make it easier to distinguish when switching between them in your account.
Hi Sarina,
I’m glad you found the solution, and thank you for sharing it!
This is great! My organization already has a QBO account that we use, but it isn’t a discounted subscription. I’ve have been approved for QBO through techsoup, but my email is already associated with our original account. How do we open the new QBO account when there is already a QBO account registered to our organization?
